Art in Action is the School’s Summer Festival of Art, celebrated annually in high Summer in the extensive grounds and buildings of Waterperry House near Oxford. It was conceived, and is planned, organised and run, by students in the School, giving of their time voluntarily to make the event a success. It is open to all.
Started in 1977, Art in Action now attracts over 22,000 visitors each year who come to watch, meet and speak to over 200 artists and crafts people demonstrating their skills and talents at the show. The demonstrators, most of whom earn their living from their art, are more than happy to talk about their work.
Other features include a programme of lectures and performing arts; a chance for visitors to see the frescoes on the walls of Waterperry House and the new outdoor theatre; a large, high quality craft market; a materials and techniques section; concerts and a wide range of fresh and enticing food. There are also the very popular practical classes, where visitors of all ages and skill levels may try out many arts and crafts, receiving expert tuition whilst doing so.
Visitors to Art in Action return year after year because of the breadth of the artistic skills on display, the quality of the work, the organisation of the event, and for the atmosphere which so many people say is peaceful, relaxing and also inspiring.
